Get the Right Care
Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), also known as the accordion procedure, is a new bariatric surgery designed to treat obesity. ESG reduces the size of the stomach so that the patient feels full faster while eating. The minimally-invasive procedure is performed endoscopically, using a camera in a flexible tube inserted through the mouth and esophagus and into the stomach. A specially designed stapler is used to bring the walls of the stomach together and decrease the overall volume of the stomach.
Patients with a BMI (Body Mass Index) above 30 kg/m2 who have not been able to lose weight or achieve obesity management through nonoperative measures are candidates for endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty. Nonoperative measures to lose excess weight include diet, physical exercise, and sometimes the administration of certain medications. Speak to your doctor regarding these conservative measures before proceeding with surgical intervention.
Patients with gastric ulcers, congestive gastropathy or varices (enlarged veins in the stomach or esophagus), gastric polyps, or other significant uncontrolled diseases are not candidates for this weight loss procedure.
