Barry L. Stein, MDCM, FRCPSC, FACS, FASCRS. Is the Director of the Center for Colon and Rectal Surgery at the McGill University Health Center (Royal Victoria Hospital and Montreal General Hospital) . He holds the rank of Assistant Professor of Surgery and Oncology at McGill University.

His specialty interests include the endoscopic management of polyps, surgical treatment of colon and rectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. His practice includes the extensive use of laparoscopic techniques to treat these surgical diseases since 1992. His research interests include the multimodal management of rectal cancer, preoperative radiotherapy for rectal cancer in a watchful waiting program, Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), Minimally Invasive Surgery and Prehabilitation in the deconditioned patient.

He also has a special interest in surgical education and served on the General Surgery Residency Training committee for many years as well as served as the Assistant Program Director in General Surgery for many years. He has earned multiple teaching awards at McGill in the Department of Surgery.

Dr. Stein earned his medical degree at McGill University in Montreal and then completed his General Surgery training at McGill. He subsequently did a 1-year GI fellowship including endoscopy at McGill. After that he completed 2 years of subspecialty training in Colon and Rectal Surgery and Colonoscopy at the Lahey Clinic, Boston, Massachusetts. He returned to Montreal and worked at the Jewish General Hospital for 10 years before moving over to the McGill University Health Center and establishing the Center for Colon and Rectal Surgery where is has been the Director since 2003.

He was also one of the founders and managing partners of a large busy ambulatory endoscopy center for 16 years in Westmount, Quebec. He has extensive experience in performing anal surgery under local anesthesia.

He is certified by the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in General Surgery, the American Board of Surgery, the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery and holds a specialist certificate in Colon and Rectal Surgery from the College des Medecins du Quebec.

Dr. Stein is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, the American College of Surgeons and the American Board of Colon & Rectal Surgery.
