Financing Your Bariatric Surgery in Quebec

Cost & Financing Options for Bariatric Surgery

  • Many patients opt for private bariatric surgery to avoid long public wait times.

  • Private bariatric surgery is offered at Clinique Michel Gagner with Dr. Michel Gagner and his team of surgeons

Wait Times

  • Private: Around 1 month after the first consultation, which can be scheduled within a few weeks

  • Public: Wait time varies and may be longer than 2 years, depending on the hospital. Seeing a specialist in the public requires a family doctor's referral, and some hospitals have additional paperwork requirements

Public Sector Eligibility

  • After waiting for a few years, candidates may still be rejected if their BMI doesn’t meet public hospital criteria.

  • Public eligibility: BMI over 40 or over 35 with obesity-related health issues.

  • At Clinique Michel Gagner we follow the most recent guidelines: Candidates qualify with a BMI of 30 if they have obesity-related conditions, or BMI over 35.
