Telogen Effluvium
What is telogen effluvium?
Telogen effluvium causes a disruption in the normal hair cycle, resulting in premature hair loss.
The hair cycle is composed of three stages:
Anagen (hair growth phase)
Catagen (hair resting phase)
Telogen (hair expulsion phase)
“Normal hair loss” occurs at the end of the telogen phase (lasting 4 to 6 weeks).
In the case of telogen effluvium, the proportion of hair follicles is abnormally high (from 7 to 35% more), which leads to significant hair loss. Total hair loss is therefore not possible.
This phenomenon is unfortunately not yet fully understood.
Possible causes:
Acute/chronic illnesses
Childbirth
Significant emotional stress
Nutritional changes (rapid weight loss, restrictive diet, nutritional
deficiencies)
Capillary infection
Endocrine disorders
Recovers, when weight loss is stopped/stabilized, hair regrowth occurs in the following 6 to 12 months.
According to studies, no product or supplement can prevent hair loss (if no deficiency is identified).
How to minimize hair loss?
Make sure you get enough protein in your diet.
Avoid dyeing hair.
Avoid using a hot iron.
Keep hair short.
Take vitamin supplements as prescribed.
Eat a wide variety of healthy, nutrient-rich foods every day.
