Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty arrives in Canada

MONTREAL, QUEBEC (May 10, 2024)

The Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is a new bariatric procedure in Canada performed for the treatment of obesity using the endoscopic suturing system. The ESG reduces the size of the stomach so that the patient feels full faster while eating. The procedure is performed endoscopically, meaning a camera is inserted through the mouth and esophagus and into the stomach. A specially designed stapler is used to bring the walls of the stomach together and decrease the overall volume of the stomach.

Dr. Lamees Almutlaq, bariatric surgeon, performed the first ESG in Canada on May 10 of this year at Westmount Square Surgical Center. Dr. Almutlaq continuously pushes the boundaries of medical innovation, and she is dedicated to delivering results that provide patients with lasting, transformative outcomes.
