Checklist for Bariatric Surgery

Use this checklist to help you prepare for your surgery.

Prior to surgery

Stop taking anti-inflammatory drugs at least 4 weeks before surgery (take Tylenol)

Stop taking birth control pills and other hormones.

Do not drink alcohol at least 48 hours before the surgery.

Quit smoking as soon as possible.

Have started the supplements prescribed by your surgeon.

Follow the instructions given by your surgeon during the consultation (if applicable).

The day before the surgery

Take a shower the day before the surgery.

For men: make sure to keep the beard very short

Do not shave the operated area (we will do this if necessary, on the morning of the surgery).

Respect the diet the day before the surgery (see document given).

Fasting from 10:00 pm the day before the surgery.

To bring with you in the suitcase:

  • Your daily medication (including inhalers and insulin).
  • Your CPAP machine (if applicable).
  • A pill cutter/pill crusher (if needed).
  • Comfortable and light clothing.
  • Extra clothes/pajamas for the hotel.
  • A pair of slippers.
  • A metal-free elastic band to tie your hair.
  • A toiletry kit.
  • A pair of glasses (do not wear contact lenses).
  • If you are having your period, bring sanitary napkins (no tampons)

Bring the bare minimum

Surgery day

Take the medication requested by the nurse when you get up (if applicable).

Stop taking water 3 hours before your admission time.

Have a glass of clear apple juice (if your admission time is after 11:00 am).

Take a shower on the morning of the intervention and wash your hair.

Remove all jewelry.

Leave any valuable items at home.

Short nail and without nail polish on the hands.

Do not wear makeup the day of the surgery.

Do not apply moisturizer.

Present yourself at the admission time indicated in the nurse's email.
