Specialty Medicine with Commitment, Compassion and Surgical Care
Unfortunately, exercise and eating right don't always give people the results they want, no matter how dedicated they are to their health. When that is the case, bariatric surgery is an option they should explore.
At Clinique Michel Gagner MD, our procedures have long-term effects and can either reduce the size of your stomach or limit the amount of nutrients your body can absorb.
Our weight-loss clinic welcomes all those that want to take control of their lives and stop living with their obesity weighing on their mind. From the sleeve gastrectomy procedure to the gastric bypass, Toronto residents know they can trust Dr. Gagner and his staff to help them through the process.
Questions Asked by Toronto Patients
We've provided some FAQs Toronto residents often have about our work.
What is Bariatric Surgery?
The term bariatric surgery is used to describe a general category of procedures, which include a variety of weight-loss surgeries from the gastric bypass to a duodenal switch to a gastric balloon. Bariatric surgery effectively helps obese people lose weight either by reducing the volume of the stomach via gastric band, removing of a portion of the stomach, or re-routing the small intestine to a small stomach pouch.
By reducing the volume of the stomach, bariatric surgery physically limits the amount of nutrients that the patient can absorb, effectively leading to weight loss.
Bariatric surgery can also help reduce the risk of other health problems, such as Type II diabetes and atherosclerosis. The preparation involved can even detect pre-existing conditions in their early stages, and potentially save the patient’s life. A gastric bypass is one of several weight-loss solutions that bariatric surgeons use.
Who Can Benefit from Bariatric Surgery?
Bariatric surgery is recommended only for Toronto patients suffering from relatively severe chronic obesity. This is a condition that is often difficult if not impossible to treat with diet and exercise alone.
Generally speaking, this type of surgery is performed on patients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 35, which is about 100 pounds over their normal weight.
In some cases, the procedure can be recommended for patients with a lower BMI if they have health conditions, including hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, asthma, or sleep apnea.
What Is Obesity?
Everyone has a BMI score that gauges health according to a formula related to their height. If the BMI is over 35, then they have too much body fat. Obesity is complex since it has many causes, some of which are:
Combining these three aspects can be problematic. Whether you're in Toronto or on the other side of the map, we live in a world where body image is valued too much for the wrong reasons. This causes people to go to extremes, such as stress eating or working out one's body too hard, because they are either unhappy with how they look and have low self-esteem or they push themselves to do everything to attain their dream body. People don't always consider the medical consequences of being overweight, which can include risks such as strokes and complications due to high cholesterol.
Lifestyle changes aren't necessarily always a magic bullet when trying to achieve an ideal body weight. Dr. Gagner is an innovative surgeon, and the health of his Toronto patients is at the forefront of his work.
Does It Make Sense for me to Travel to Montreal?
We have many patients traveling from out-of-province to have their procedure done in Montreal. Traveling a few hours makes sense if you want to have your surgery done by one of the world’s best bariatric surgeons!
Traveling patients are recommended to travel to and from Montreal accompanied. Traveling patients will usually spend a total of 5 nights in Montreal, two of which are already included in the operative fee.
